Abstract: Recent research topics and research achievements at the RF & Microwave Group at the NationalUniversity in Singapore are presented.

The modeling and measurement of square spiral inductors in CMOS is presented first. Modeling of these components is a necessity with technology nodes going to 65 nm, 45 nm and below. The characterization of resonators and the design of millimeter wave filters at 60 GHz is also presented. Then the design of integrated oscillators is presented. Novel oscillator techniques at 10 GHz and 30 GHz are demonstrated. Subsequently work on phase shifter design for application in beam steerable antennas is presented. The focus of the phase shifter work is to achieve a large instantaneous bandwidth.

Applications of phase shifters in compact filters and wideband oscillators will also be demonstrated. Finally, achievements on a short range localization system for 60 GHz applications using received signal strength (RSS) localization are shown.

Professor Koen Mouthaan received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree from Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. He conducted his Ph.D. research on the modeling of RF high power transistors. Subsequently he worked as a designer and project leader at the TNO organization in The Netherlands. Subsequently he joined SkyGate B.V., a company designing and manufacturing phased array antennas for consumer applications. In 2003 he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the NationalUniversity in Singapore. Currently he supervises several postgraduate students and his research interests include modeling, characterization, design and measurement of passive and active microwave components and circuits.
