Title: Measurement-Based Power System Modeling
Abstract
A complete power system is arguably one of the largest and most complicated systems in the world. For example,
the western North Americanpower grid is one totally interconnected system involving 14 western US states, two
Canadian provinces, and a portion of Mexico. Such systems are difficult to fully understand, model, and operate
due to their scope as well as complexity. With increased renewable penetration and a limited amount of new
transmission, the grids are becoming even more complex.
A key new technology that has been widely installed due to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009,
but not yet widely utilized, is synchrophasor measurements which provide power utilities GPS time‐synchronized
high‐rate measurement data from the entire grid. These measurement systems are known as Wide‐Area‐
Measurement‐Systems (WAMS) and they extensively use Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) as the measurement
devices. This vast amount of real-time synchrophasor data is considered the most promising resource to monitor,
operate, and control the grid to ensure its future reliable and economic operation. The potential impact is tremendous
with the possibility of increasing the reliability of the grid and decreasing the economic loss from power system
disturbances and outages. Much of the measurement system is brand new and to date highly underutilized. Control
centers have a computationally challenging task of storing, accessing, processing, and extracting the useful
information to display from up to a thousand channels of high data‐rate real‐time synchrophasors. Only now
is effort being placed on fully developing applications for this high speed data.
In this talk, we will give an overview of the research in measurement-based power system modeling at the University
of Wyoming, with a particular example in the GPS-spoofed synchrophasor data correction.
